Each year, the fishing season opener in Minnesota is a big deal.

So big that the state will enforce some oversize/overweight travel restrictionsFishing Opener Restrictions in Minnesota Friday, May 10 through Monday, May 13.

No oversize or overweight travel will be allowed from 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 10 until 2:00 a.m. Saturday, May 11 and from 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12 until 2:00 a.m. Monday, May 13, according to the state DOT.

Fishing opener in the state means Walleye season. The weekend opener has unofficially been dubbed “Walleye season opener” by many anglers. One of the biggest fishing opener events includes the Governor’s Fishing Opener in Albert Lea. Although quite a few other lakes in the state will have an abundance of Walleye, such as Fountain Lake, Pickerel Lake, Geneva Lake and the Shell Rock River.

Aside from the oversize travel restrictions, the weekend will be sweet,  especially for moms. Because the opener falls on Mother’s Day weekend, all moms are allowed to fish statewide without a fishing license.
